Fifth grade students will focus on three areas of mathematics. They will build fluency in adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions. Fifth grade students will develop an understanding of volume. Fifth grade students will also extend division to two divisors and integrate decimals in the place value system. Finally, in the area of math, fifth grade students will master 90% of their basic fluency facts with automaticity from long term memory as outlined in the Hall County Balanced Scorecard. For Language Arts, fifth grade students will quote accurately from a text when explaining what a text says explicitly. They will also be able to determine meaning of words and phrases as they are used in text, including figurative language such as similes and metaphors. Fifth grade students will read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension. In the area of writing, fifth grade students will write opinion, informational, and narrative pieces in descriptive detail and clear sequences. Fifth grade students will complete three service learning projects per year as outlined in the Hall County Balanced Scorecard.
