Second grade students will focus on four areas of mathematics. They will have an understanding of numbers in base 10 notation. Second grade students will continue to build fluency with addition and subtraction, use standard units of measurement, and describe and analyze geometric shapes. For Language Arts, second grade students will ask and answer who, what, when, where, why, and how to understand details in a text. They will also be able to recount stories from diverse cultures and determine their central meaning and message. Second grade students will describe how words and phrases supply rhythm and meaning in a story, poem, or song. They will be able to read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension. For the area of writing, second grade students will write opinion, informative, and narrative pieces and be able to sequence events. Second grade students will complete two service learning projects per year as outlined in the Hall County Balanced Scorecard.
