First grade students will focus on four areas of mathematics. They will understand addition and subtraction and strategies to use within 20. First grade students will understand whole number relationships, place value, linear measurement, measuring lengths, and how to compose and decompose geometric shapes. For Language Arts, first grade students will retell stories, including details of their central message or lesson. First grade students will demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds. For the area of writing, first grade students will write opinion, informative, and narrative pieces, being able to introduce the topic and sequence events appropriately. First grade students will complete two service learning projects per year as outlined in the Hall County Balanced Scorecard.
